Stains on the Ceiling
Light or darker brown stains forming the ceiling are an indication of water damage rather than fading paint. A ceiling painted with a dark color will usually reveal water damage with areas that are be noticeably discolored.

The water damage may be from a leaking appliance located above the stains. Alternately, there may be a leak in the roof. A faulty plumbing fixture could permit water to seep into the ceiling and leave behind unsightly stains.

Wooden Floors Buckling
Moisture is the enemy of hardwood flooring and can lead to buckling floors. This can occur if the moisture has an opportunity to accumulate, either suddenly or over time. Small spills left to dry on their own can result in expanding or contracting floorboards. Changes in indoor humidity levels also can lead to moisture accumulation and buckling.

Bubbling, Soft Drywall
A porous material, drywall tends to absorb moisture. When wet, drywall turns soft. So, if there are walls in your home that feel soft to the touch, it’s a sure warning sign of water damage.

Mold and Mildew Odors
Mold spores will flourish in spaces that are rich in moisture. Detecting mold growth by odor will simultaneously indicate the occurrence of water damage. Condensation, high levels of humidity in the home and leaky pipes are a recipe for mold. Remediating mold will be successful only when the source of water is located and resolved.
